Glorious Granite: Man’s Favourite Construction Material

Granite, by definition is an igneous rock which contains no less than twenty percent quartz by total volume. Granite is a volcanic rock formed from magma deep in the Earth’s crust which heats existing rocks to melting pint combining with the magma which gives the rock its distinctive speckled or grainy appearance. As this cools, quartz crystals are formed giving granite its defining ingredient. Granite is currently only known on Earth and astro-geologists, being those who study rock formations on other planets, are yet to discover granite like rock formations outside of our blue planet. However seeing as granite is the bedrock of Earth, forming a major part of the continental crust, I’m sure granite like rocks do exist in the far reaches of space.

Here on Earth granite has been the mainstay of the construction industry since at least the time of ancient Egypt. Granite is both ubiquitous and workable which meant the rock could be quarried and hewn within a reasonable distance of the structure it was being used for. The great pyramids of Gaza are hewn from local granite, as are the pyramids of south America and many ancient structures throughout Asia are also constructed from granite. Granite was not only used for huge foundation or construction stones, as it was also commonly carved into statues, the most famous being the Sphinx, and split into granite tiles too throughout the ancient world. Home Improvement Tips That Can Save You Time And Money

You know what homeowners can learn from the Boy Scouts? Their motto, which is to always be prepared. I’m going to help get you started. Below is a list of tips that can save you time and money when it comes to making repairs around your house or improving it. Keep them in a safe place and refer to them when needed.

- Go for flooring that installs quickly. There are a number of flooring finishes that can be very quick to install, including bamboo, wood, cork, wall-to-wall carpeting, and sheet vinyl and linoleum. These will allow the floor to be rapidly set into place within a small period of time. Especially when compared with slower installations such as ceramic tile.

- Don’t go cheap on your carpet underlay. A carpet is only as good as its underlay. Even if you have obtained the best quality carpet available on the market, if you don’t have it installed with a great under-padding, it will not feel as nice nor will it wear as well. Lengthen the life of your carpet and save money over time by picking out a great underlay product. Read the rest of this entry »

Five Tips for Understanding the Role of The Structural Engineer

From time to time all property owners need the services of a Structural Engineer. Here are five tips that will help you take the right decision.

Qualifications & Experience

Ideally the engineer you appoint should be a Chartered Engineer and be a member of a professional body such as The Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) or The Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStuctE). If they are members of one of these organisations you can be assured they have appropriate qualifications and accreditations. Fire and Water Damage Restoration Professionals

When fire and water damage restoration is necessary, there are different means of approaching each cleanup and repair project, depending on the circumstances involved. For example, how much water was involved in the flooding incident? Was the water relatively clean or was it contaminated with sewage, chemicals, or other toxins? How long was the water allowed to sit unattended, permeating walls, carpet, wood cabinetry, and furniture? Were hazardous chemicals involved in the fire? How much smoke and soot permeated the premises? How much and what kind of toxic fumes and gases were produced by the blaze?

With fire and water damage restoration, there are other issues to consider as well. Smoke and fire damages need to be cleaned out and premises need to be ventilated to reduce odors. Floodwater, spills and water accidents need to be removed and dried as quickly as possible. When building materials are allowed to be continuously soaked in water for an extended period of time, they will have to be replaced rather than repaired or restored.

Mold and mildew usually stem from water damages that were neglected and not cleaned out and repaired. Given the proper conditions to thrive, mold propagates rather quickly. Mold is a significant health hazard in the home environment and is responsible for symptoms such as headaches, runny nose, asthma, dizziness, rashes, fatigue, respiratory problems, and others. Thus, water damage that is left unattended for over 48 hours is likely to develop mold as well as structural damage, requiring more involved repair work and driving up the cost of the fire and water damage restoration project. Home Improvement Tips That Can Save Money And Make Your Home Better

Not all improvements to your home have to cost you a lot of money. In many instances they save you money in the long run by just getting you to look at things differently. As you read the tips below, think about how you can use them to make your home better without the need to break the bank.

1. Choose water conserving bathroom fixtures. It is possible to lessen your water bill very easily with the use of the proper fixtures like shower heads with a water restricting feature and dual flush or low flow toilets. These will also help to save on your energy bill as you will not only use less water, but less hot water, which is costly to heat.

2. Install a rainwater collection system. That may sound complex, but it involves nothing more than collecting runoff from your downspouts into rain barrels. This water can then be used for watering your garden and your lawn. It’s a terrific way to save water over the years, which is eco-friendly and easy on your budget.

3. Put in plumbing prior to wiring. Plumbing work (and heating/duct work, for that matter) should always be accomplished prior to putting in low voltage wiring. This not only keeps the wires out of the way when working on pipes, but it also avoids accidental electrocution and fires due to damaged wires from issues like soldering torch heat that can melt wire insulation.
